A Gang Goes Walking

By Robyn Kontra Tanner
Eight turkies cross a road on Cal Poly's campus in front of Bishop Peak

On any other year, a wayward group stranded in the middle of a campus road in September would mean a gaggle of WOWies had lost their sense of direction. But in 2020, a few animals have made 1 Grand Avenue their humble abode in the absence of the usual campus commotion. Our photographer Joe Johnston has spotted an abundance of deer, squirrel and this gang of wild turkeys that faced no traffic whatsoever while crossing near the Construction Innovation Center. Their precocious waddle is certainly a sign that life presses on despite a global pandemic. While many at Cal Poly are eager to see campus life return to full strength, we — much like the turkeys —  can only imagine what lies on the other side.
