Former Mustangs Brooks Lee and Drew Thorpe went head-to-head within weeks of their MLB debuts.

On July 10, sports fans saw the first head-to-head matchup of former Cal Poly Baseball teammates in Major League Baseball when the Twins took on the White Sox. Minnesota third baseman Brooks Lee faced Chicago pitcher Drew Thorpe in two at-bats, and by all accounts, the Mustang vs. Mustang matchup ended in a draw.

Thorpe struck out Lee on a check swing ending the third inning. Lee answered with a solo home run in the sixth inning over the right-field fence, putting the Twins on the scoreboard en route to a 3-2 victory.

Drafted following the 2022 season at Cal Poly, Lee (eighth overall) and Thorpe (61st) represent Cal Poly’s first-ever picks in the first and second rounds, respectively, in the same draft. Both made their major league debuts this season, joining four other alumni on MLB rosters.

“I’m extremely proud of both of them,” said Larry Lee, Cal Poly’s head coach and Brooks’ father. He said the pair of All-Americans have been best friends, roommates and workout partners in the offseason.

“Both of them have many of the same traits that allow them to be successful at a high level in a difficult sport. Being in the same division, hopefully this was the first of many matchups against each other.”

Overall, Cal Poly has sent 24 alumni to the MLB, 15 of whom have been coached by Larry Lee.
