Trumpets serenaded the crowd as members of Imagen y Espíritu Ballet Folklórico de Cal Poly lit up UU plaza with traditional Mexican dancing during the university’s annual CultureFest in October. Barbara Rodriguez, an animal science student, glided and twirled to “El Son de la Negra,” a song from the region of Jalisco. The number’s choreography was long and complicated, giving experienced performers like Rodriguez the chance to shine. The groups new members also took center stage to dance to “La Guacamaya” from the region of Sinaloa.
