Clint Bryson, technical director for the Cal Poly Theatre and Dance Department, inhabits a world rarely seen by the average performing arts fan, where the artistry of the theater takes form under hammer, saw and paintbrush. We visited him in the department scene shop during the brief respite between the department’s winter production of “The Crucible” and spring production of “Black Comedy.”
Joining the Scene
“I was an actor as a child and through high school. A year into college, while acting in a show, I met the technical crew and was asked to help with another production. One show led to many, and I quickly changed majors to theatre production and never looked back.”
Setting the Stage
“Theater is a collaborative art. Set design is the foundation for a story to exist within. A good set design will capture the logical and emotional connections associated with the story. Good design comets the illusion for the audience.”
An Art and a Craft
“Building scenery encompasses carpentry, painting, upholstery and metal fabrication. Lighting design is a mix of art and technology using color and shadows, electricity and computers. Making sound come from the speakers is a craft, but choosing how much cricket is in that midnight sound cue is an art.”
Ideas Take Form
I like the challenge of the puzzle that each production presents. We take abstract ideas and turn them into tangible things. We are storytellers, teachers, artists and craftspeople. I love the variety and imagination.”
