President Armstrong speaks at the dedication ceremony of the John Madden Football Center.
Earlier this summer, we celebrated the opening of the John Madden Football Center — a facility that honors one of Cal Poly’s most accomplished alumni while creating new opportunities for today’s student-athletes to learn, grow and succeed.
The center provides state-of-the-art facilities that represent an investment in our students and reflects the values that defined John Madden and his family: preparation, commitment and excellence.
I am deeply grateful to Virginia Madden, John’s sons Mike and Joe, and the entire Madden family for helping bring his vision for this center to life. I am equally thankful to the many donors whose generosity made this project possible and who share our belief in the value of athletics as an integral part of the educational experience.
At Cal Poly, learning happens everywhere — in classrooms, laboratories, studios, at sea and on athletic fields, courts and tracks. Through athletics, students develop leadership, discipline, resilience, teamwork and the ability to perform under pressure. These lessons prepare them for success long after graduation.
Few people embodied that philosophy more completely than John Madden.
Coach Madden’s remarkable career spanned athletics, broadcasting and business. He maintains the highest regular-season winning percentage in NFL history and led the Oakland Raiders to their first Super Bowl championship. As a broadcaster, he earned 16 Sports Emmy Awards and became the only color commentator to work for all four major U.S. broadcast networks, helping transform the way fans experience the game. A member of both the Pro Football Hall of Fame and the inaugural Cal Poly Athletics Hall of Fame class, he also helped create one of the most successful sports franchises in entertainment history through his partnership with EA Sports on the Madden NFL video game series.
Yet John’s success was never rooted in talent alone. It was built on preparation, hard work, curiosity and a commitment to continuous improvement.
Those principles mirror Cal Poly’s Learn by Doing philosophy. We challenge students to apply their knowledge, work collaboratively, overcome setbacks, and continue growing throughout their lives. Johnʼs example remains a powerful reminder of what is possible when determination meets opportunity.

President Jeffrey D. Armstrong
When I stand in the grand lobby and see Coach Madden’s bronze statue gazing toward the memorial honoring his teammates lost in the 1960 plane crash, I am reminded of his extraordinary ability to connect with people from all walks of life. The building represents the power of community, the pursuit of excellence and our shared responsibility to help students reach their full potential.
A building, no matter how impressive, gains meaning only through the people who bring it to life. The students, coaches, faculty and staff who will use this facility every day are its true purpose.
Thank you to the Madden family, our donors and supporters who make opportunities like this possible and who continue to strengthen the Cal Poly experience for generations of students.
